چکیده

[1] A three-dimensional absolute velocity field on the isopycnal surface in the northwest Pacific subtropical region in the summer is calculated from the Navy’s Generalized Digital Environmental Model (GDEM) climatological temperature and salinity data on a 0.5 0.5 grid using the P-vector method. GDEM for the area was built from historical (1930–1997) temperature and salinity profiles. The basic current system, consisting of North Equatorial Current, Kuroshio and its recirculation, Subtropical Countercurrent (STCC), is identified. STCC occurs from the surface to the level of sq = 25.8 between 18 N and 23.5 N, with a maximum velocity around 0.1 m/s. At sq = 23.5, STCC originates east of Luzon Strait at around 122.5 E and meanders eastward. As sq increases, its origin shifts toward northeast. Comparison between velocity and potential vorticity fields leads to the conclusion that the STCC core is above the southern boundary of the subtropical mode water.

The eastward subtropical countercurrent on isopycnal surface in the western North Pacific

The monthly circulations on isopycnal surface in the western North Pacific are calculated based on the Navy’s Generalized Digital Environmental Model climatological temperature and salinity data on a 1/2° × 1/2° grid using a P-vector method. The eastward Subtropical Countercurrent (STCC) in the central subtropical gyre has been studied with emphasis on its spatial distribution, vertical structu...

A Numerical Simulation of the Mean Water Pathways in the Subtropical and Tropical Pacific Ocean

A reduced-gravity, primitive-equation, upper-ocean general circulation model is used to study the mean water pathways in the North Pacific subtropical and tropical ocean. The model features an explicit physical representation of the surface mixed layer, realistic basin geometry, observed wind and heat flux forcing, and a horizontal grid-stretching technique and a vertical sigma coordinate to ob...

Seasonal variation of eddy kinetic energy of the North Pacific Subtropical Countercurrent simulated by an eddy-resolving OGCM

[1] The seasonal variation of eddy kinetic energy (EKE) of the North Pacific Subtropical Countercurrent (STCC) was investigated by analyzing the data from an eddy-resolving OGCM with the horizontal resolution 1/12 in comparison with satellite altimetry data. Although the annual cycle of simulated EKE of the whole STCC domain showed agreement with satellite data, with a maximum in spring and a m...

Indian Ocean capacitor effect on Indo-western Pacific climate during the summer following El Nino

Significant climate anomalies persist through the summer (June-August) after El Nino dissipates in spring over the equatorial Pacific. They include the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) sea surface temperature (SST) warming, increased tropical tropospheric temperature, an anomalous anticyclone over the subtropical Northwest Pacific, and increased Meiyu-Baiu rainfall over East Asia. The cause of these...

Summer Upper-Level Vortex over the North Pacific

During northern warm seasons, the overhead sun moves northward across the equator to the Northern Hemisphere. Because of the decrease in the meridional thermal gradients, particularly in midlatitudes, the Northern Hemisphere summer circulation becomes less rigorous in its intensity. In spite of this seasonal change, certain circulation elements still distinctly stand out. As shown in Fig. 1a, t...
